ER Scare.

It wouldn't be an eventful Christmas break without an ER visit.  So yes, we have known for a while now that Gage is allergic to tree nuts.  He isn't allergic to ALL tree nuts but he is to most of them so we just stay away from all of them.  Typically its not a huge inconvenience and tree nuts are easy to stay away from EXCEPT when chocolate is around.  Ding ding ding.....Christmas time.

So here is how it all went down.

The day after Christmas we were at the Farm at my Mom and Dad's to celebrate Christmas with our family from Asheville.  We played all day and had just finished dinner when one of my nieces asked if Gage could have a piece of chocolate (my mom had a box of assorted chocolates on the counter).  I said sure, just check the label.  Gage said he wanted red so Piper looked at the box and saw that the red one was milk chocolate.  I told her he could have it.  So he ate it.

2 minutes later he told Erik he had to throw up.  He was kinda of spitting up but nothing too worrisome.  Minutes later his face was red and he had some hives around his mouth.  He was not swallowing his slobber and seemed a little out of it (NOT like himself).  At this point I immediately thought about the chocolate.  I assumed that the chocolates must have been made in a factory with tree nuts (which doesn't typically bother Gage) so we decided to get him some benadryl.  Side note:  I did not have his epi-pens with me (won't make that mistake again) and I have never had to use them.  If I had had them, I would have used them this time.  My mom did not have kids benadryl so we opened an adult capsule and tried to make Gage take half of it.  Well, it must have been nasty because he spit it out.

So, Erik said, I'll go to the store and get kids benadryl.  I decided that Gage and I should ride with him so that we could give Gage the medicine right away.  We gave Gage the medicine in the car and headed back to my Mom and Dads.  I contemplated while we were sitting in the parking lot if we should go ahead and go to the ER or not but I couldn't really tell if his condition had worsened because it was so dark.  We decided to wait on the ER, hoping that the benadryl would help (plus my sister is a nurse and she was there so I wanted her to check him out after the benadryl).  At this point, his symptoms seemed to be about the same with some added coughing.

Well, when we got back to my Mom and Dads, Erik carried him back into the barn and I immediately broke down.....he looked AWFUL.  His entire face (including ears) were red, he had hives all over his face, he was coughing, seemed like he couldn't swallow, and he was REALLY out of it.  Erik and I immediately got back into the car and headed to the ER at the hospital in Lincolnton.  I cried the whole way there.  It is terrifying when something happens to your child.  Even though we knew what it was, its so scary.  I cannot imagine having a child that is sick with an incurable illness, makes me sick to my stomach.

Anyways, Erik dropped Gage and I off and he went and parked the car.  I walked into the ER and wanted to faint, there were at least 30-40 people waiting.  I went up to the desk and the lady said, "Can I help....oh my goodness".  She didn't even finish her question.  She immediately called for an emergency doctor and got us to a room.  3 nurses and a doctor came in right away and went to work. Dr. Thompson (I'll never forget him) listened to his lungs and said his airway was definitely closing (not all the way, thank the Lord).  So he gave Gage a breathing treatment, IV and several medications.  About 30 minutes later the hives started to go away and he was already looking better.  He was super tired from the medications (benadryl was one of them) and fell asleep moments after arriving.  The doctor had us stay for a little while just to monitor him.   After about a two hour stay, we were ready to go home!  Gage never woke up until the next morning, he was exhausted.

We are so thankful for the physicians and nurses at the Lincolnton hospital.  They were so quick to help and gave excellent care to Gage.  To all doctors and nurses, you have my upmost respect for what you do.  THANK YOU!

By the way, I happened to remember to look at the chocolates just to see if in fact it was because the chocolate was made in a factory with other nuts.  Well......there happened to be TWO different chocolates wrapped in red.  One was a hazelnut truffle :(  Totally my fault for not double checking the chocolate.

Moral of the story,  never underestimate how severe an allergy can be.  Gage had NEVER had a reaction like this one before, not even close.  But it doesn't matter.  I was careless and unfortunately my child had to suffer because of it.  My purse is now stocked with kids benadryl and epi-pens.  Although the epi-pens would have helped with the onset of the symptoms, the doctor said we would have had to bring him to the hospital regardless because the reaction was so severe....that made me feel a little better.  Definitely an eye opening experience for Erik and I.

You can see all the slobber on his shirt and car seat straps from not swallowing :(

He had lots of hives around his mouth and under his eyes.  His whole face and eyes were swollen.  This was right when we got to the hospital.

Breathing treatment with a dinosaur mask :)

He asked Erik to send PawPaw a picture of his shot, haha!

The drugs taking over in the hospital.

The next day.  He was a little pale with some purple under his eyes but MUCH better!

Thank you SO much for all the prayers and check-ups.  We love you all!

Christmas 2015.

My New Years Resolution is to blog more.  I know, I shoot for the moon with my new years resolutions....gotta keep them attainable :)

To prepare for Christmas, first we went and picked out a tree at Cedar Lake Farm!  I swore I would never buy another real Christmas Tree but I lied.  We also went and saw Santa at Bass Pro.  There was a long line but we didn't have to stand in it because they give you a time frame to come back at, genius.  Lyla wouldn't smile but no crying so thats good!

To get a picture of these two now-a-days......shew.

They loved the huge fish at Bass Pro.

We also had breakfast with Santa at Red Rocks.  We had breakfast and took a picture with Santa.

The "Seriously, quit taking pictures" look.

Every year my mom and dads church (the church I grew up in) has a live nativity.  My mom sings and we love to go watch her!   That's her singing but not the best picture :(

We also went to zootastic....super cool!  Lots of lights and animals to look at.  "We" fed the tigers, meaning we paid $3 for a worker to give the tiger a quarter size of meat but it was cool to see the tiger jump up for it!  The giraffe was hilarious, he would run around his barn then run and stick his head out of one of the openings.  You could buy crackers to feed him so that was fun to see.  Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of him :(

Of course we had to go to Krispy Kreme after a Panther win!

As always, we carried on our tradition of baking.  Everyone came to my house this year because we are all in rentals and my kitchen is the biggest.  A little sad we weren't in mom's kitchen that we grew up in but we made the best of it!  We made peppermint bark, rice kripsy treats, buck eyes, white trash and more stuff I am forgetting.  We didn't take many pictures, oops.

Gage's annual sugar with cookie, ha!

You can tell she had been sick :(

Christmas was marvelous as always.  We went to Burlington to spend Christmas Eve with Erik's family.  We got to visit Grandmaw Allene in the nursing home.  She opened several gifts from everyone, we took some pictures and then left.  We went back to Grammy J's and did the white elephant Christmas.  I got a neck massager and Erik got a panini maker :)  We had a wonderful time and came back with a trunk FULL of presents.  Alicia got me a yeti coffee cup....I love it!!  It seriously does keep coffee hot for forever.  Janice got me a fit bit so I've been wearing that and its super cool because it monitors your heart rate.  We drove back Christmas Eve night so the kids could wake up to see what Santa brought.

He loves his doggie blanket!

Gage practically opened all her gifts for her.  She managed to open a few :)

Once we got everyone in bed (it took a while), we set out all the presents.  I told Erik we were doing the "Wise Men" Christmas, something you wear, read, need and want.  Well.....he didn't stick by that rule.  I do have to say, the "wear" and "read" presents were not quite exciting, lol.  You know what kids do when they open a gift that isn't a toy?  They throw it to the side.  So it was kinda nice to see them open a few toys.  Gage got a leap frog, huge train track set and a big dinosaur that Erik found at Toys-R-Us.  Lyla got a Minnie Mouse shopping cart, baby carrier and stroller and a few other little toys.  Gage said his favorite was the dinosaur and Lyla LOVES to push the shopping cart around.  Its true, Christmas is so much fun with little ones.  Once we had our Christmas we got ready to go to the Looper Christmas.

So sad....that's all the pictures I got of Christmas Morning.

This year was our first Christmas that wasn't at Mt. Holly Huntersville Rd....sad but time for new memories!  Mom and Dad decorated a tree and we had Christmas in the barn at the farm!  It's not your average barn, its super nice.  As usual, they out did themselves.  The kids all opened their presents and then the adults did.  The bigger girls got chrome books so we didn't hear from them for a while, ha!  The little ones got a trike and they loved those!  Dad also bought a basketball goal so that took up some time too.  We played, ate and played some more.  Lindsay, Lauren and I had a sign made for dad (thanks David and Mike) for the farm:  Looper's Ponderosa.  Dad always joked that would be the name so we went ahead and had the sign made....he loved it!  We ate too much and enjoyed ourselves.  Later that day, we headed to Mimi's (my mom's mom).  We got to see more family and hang out!

Dad's sign.  Farm life, here we come!

Our family from Asheville didn't come on Christmas this year because Barrett was getting a puppy!  Her name is Chesnee (from Chesnee, SC) and she is adorable!  Pam, Jenna, JJ and Barrett came the day after Christmas and we had leftovers, shot clays and even went to the ER.  That's a whole nother' blog post :)  Shocker.....none of the videos work.  I give up.

Here is a picture of Yaya and all her babies :)  We love her so much and would buy her the world if we could.  Our kids LOVE to go to Yaya's and never want to leave.....you cannot find that just anywhere.

Another successful Christmas in the books.  I have to say, this season has flown by and I felt less prepared than I have ever felt.  I already made a promise to myself to not let that happen next year.  We are so thankful for Jesus our Savior who is the TRUE reason for the season.  We are so blessed to spend yet another Christmas with our families that we love.  Thank you Jesus and Happy Birthday!

Halloween 2015.

I think we may have started a new tradition this year!  Lauren, her girls and Jeremy and his girls and the Maultsby's came over (Lindsay had a migraine, my parents were at the beach and Chris just has shoulder surgery) to go trick-or-treating.  Before we went trick-or-treating we had chili and cornbread, yum!  I made mummy hot dogs, jack-o-lantern oranges and ghost cheese sticks for the kids....thanks pinterest.  Around 6 we went out and went trick-or-treating in Riverbend.  We stayed out for a couple of hours and the kids were loaded down with candy!  Gage had no problem going to peoples doors and Lyla wasn't far behind him.  Gage was a cowboy and Lyla was an indian.  I found the cowboy outfit on amazon ($15, whoop whoop) and bought the cowboy boots ($15 and they are NICE) off the yard sale site!  My sweet friend Jen made Lyla's tutu and head band for her outfit.  Super cheap and easy Halloween!
